Literacy Development

Children at Southernwood have many opportunities for group discussions and storytelling. We have a large selection of books, which are freely available. We have at least one story-time every session. Children are encouraged to handle books and talk about the stories and pictures, ask questions and express their own ideas. We use written words all around the nursery, such as on displays etc. so that children learn that words convey meaning. Children have name cards, which are used regularly. Their names are written on their work. Efforts to write their own names are praised, and they are taught to form the letters correctly. Early pre-reading and pre-writing skills are taught (when each child is ready).

Small group activities are planned daily to teach the language/literacy and maths focus of the week. (See weekly planning board) Rising fours and above have individual daily sessions with a teacher working at their own level.
