Children are taught a familiarity with mathematical language through number songs, rhymes, number picture books, games and through their play with bricks, dolls, balls etc. We emphasise the use of numbers up to ten and sometimes beyond. Matching and sequencing is learnt through games, puzzles and discussion. Every day events such as counting the number of children in and out and others, encourages the development of number concepts. We begin to explore the concept of money through shop play and games.
There are daily small group sessions, organised by the teachers where the children play games that encourage the learning of number skills. Individual work is done with the rising fours and above with an adult and this reinforces the focus of the week. When writing numbers, children are taught the correct formation.
