Understanding of the World
At Southernwood we have ample opportunity for our children to observe and learn about nature through gardening and observation of mini beasts and birds in our secret garden. We look after our chickens and, of course, Cocoa the rabbit! Through activities such as growing seeds and helping to tend their own garden and feeding the birds, the children develop their understanding even further. Stories, games, picture books, etc. reinforce these ideas when we cannot get outside. In addition, our regular themes throughout the year frequently include aspects of wildlife and the world around us. Children are encouraged to talk about themselves, their families, their pets and events that have happened at home. Theme and topic work frequently include discussion, painting and model work to underline these skills.
